Angioplasty is a procedure in which the arteries are opened to allow blood to flow more easily. Doctors use this minimally invasive procedure in narrow areas of arteries where plaque is narrowing or blocking the space within an artery.
People with coronary artery disease or who have had a heart attack may need coronary angioplasty. Angioplasty is also used on other parts of the body where the arteries are narrowed or blocked, such as the neck, arms and legs, kidneys, and pelvis. Angioplasty allows more blood to flow through an artery that is too narrow or clogged with plaque. This means that the organ supplied by the artery receives better blood flow after the angioplasty.
Angioplasty treats atherosclerosis in your arteries in different parts of your body.
