Blood travels via your arteries, capillaries, and veins as it circulates throughout your body. Blood actually goes directly from an artery into a vein through an arteriovenous (AV) fistula, bypassing part of the capillaries and reducing blood supply to the tissues below the capillaries that are bypassed. Your doctor will place a stethoscope over the suspected AV fistula site and listen for a sound that sounds like clicking or buzzing machinery, known as a machinery murmur. He or she will verify that the AV fistula is the cause of any murmurs that are heard.
